Hot Wheels: World Race is, but instead of a mere twenty minutes, you have to sit through it for two hours. No small feat, considering it looks worse and is even less exciting.
Since the dawn of cinema, we’ve been fascinated with watching things that move fast blip across a screen shuttering twenty-four frames a second. Heck, the most prototypical example of moving pictures would be a photographer’s attempt to catch a racehorse mid-stream (his query: was there ever a moment where a horse’s four legs were all off the ground? The answer was the affirmative).
In 1995, the US lifted the 55MPH highway speed limit to 65MPH. Researchers have estimated this upgrade has accounted for 12,545 additional deaths on the road over the course of 1995-2005. That’s four 9/11′s. That’s every US fatality from the Iraq occupation and Afghanistan occupation combined, and then some. That’s over twelve thousand people who never got to live their full lives because of a change in speed limit law. That’s not even accounting for other injuries, lost treasure, and various emotional stress – the final count of which must be much, much higher. And yet, this law will almost certainly never be revoked or lowered. Why?
We love our Speed
On the screen, in real life, and everything in between, we love to see things go fast and we love it even more if we can be inside or atop the fast-moving thing. Human nature, I suppose. A primal desire to be the most fit or the quickest creature, perhaps. Whatever it is, for the good of mankind, we need to keep ourselves in check. We need to come up with initiatives to stop these mindless fatalities. Just don’t expect Mattel to be the first to aid in the cause. Not when they can sell tiny plastic cars.

Some of you out there, who actually have friends, may remember a great little party game called Worms. In each of the series’ three installments, the goal was to take your ultra cute little worms and use a combination of extreme firepower and super high explosives to kick the crap out of your buddies’ equally cute worms. Weapons ranged from the mundane (e.g. a bazooka) to comedy classics (e.g. a Holy Hand Grenade) to downright nonsensical (e.g. the little old lady). But it was always addicting, and one of the most underrated game series around.
With the release of Hogs of War, Infogrames has essentially brought us a 3D version of the game. While it brings along some of the positive points of Worms, it fails to capture the same hilarious gameplay, adding little with the new 3D world.
The plot is the standard throw-away excuse to fight to the death: A new supply of swill (apparently, some ultra-valuable resource) has been discovered on the island of ‘Saustralasia’. You’re one of five ethnic parodies whose job is to drive all other potential swill-seekers off the island.
The game proceeds almost exactly like Worms. During a battle, each pig has a short amount of time to move around, select a weapon, line up a shot, and try to blast an enemy pig to smithereens. Each individual pig has a small arsenal of only four or five weapons, but you can pick up new ones from the battlefield. When your team is the only one left standing, you win.
An interesting addition is the ability to have your pigs specialize. Depending on how you promote your soldiers, you can get everything from medics to spies, each with their own amount of health and specialized weapons. While this is an interesting addition to the formula, you end up with a tiny arsenal. The main attraction of Wormswas the mind-bogglingly huge inventory, giving you plenty of options of annihilating your opponents. While there’s still enough weapons to keep you from getting bored in hogs, there isn’t the same frantic random feeling which comes from a completely pointless and insane set of weapons.

The game allows you to follow the narrative of the first Godfather movie or strike off on your own to take over the territories of the rival crime families. The storyline offers you a nice variety of mission types while you interact with both original characters and recognizable ones from the movie. Although the game manages to work your character into the story very well for the most part, there are a few times where some rather large liberties are taken. Remember the scene where Don Vito is being driven to hospital while being shot at by the Tattaglia family? No, me neither. Though the casual fan likely won’t have a problem with EA’s artistic license, Godfather purists (and they’re out there) may not be so forgiving.
The side missions of taking over businesses, rackets and enemy warehouses offers both a diversion from the storyline and some fairly straightforward action. The problem is that things can get a little too straightforward. Just as businesses and their owners are repeated, so are your enemies and their strongholds. If you’re an obsessive-compulsive completist or just can’t get enough of blowing mobsters away, then this part of the game should hold you over. Otherwise it tends to get old.
